This geography-led journey brings together the energy of Marrakesh with the contrasting environments of the High Atlas and the Marrakesh Plain. Pupils explore the UNESCO-listed medina, examine traditional trade and craftsmanship, and see how the city’s historic buildings, faith and public spaces continue to shape everyday life.
Beyond the city, field observations make physical and human geography tangible. Visits to a major reservoir, mountain communities and a rural village introduce water security, erosion, tectonic landscapes, climate pressures and the ways communities adapt while preserving their identity and traditions.

Day 1
Arrival and the Living Medina
Fly from the UK to Marrakesh, meet your local representative and transfer to the accommodation. After checking in, begin a guided introduction to the old city at Jemaa el-Fna, where performers, food stalls, traders and local residents fill one of Morocco’s best-known public spaces. Continue past the Koutoubia Mosque and into the winding souks, observing how the medina’s narrow streets influence movement, trade and daily life. A visit to a traditional apothecary introduces the herbs, spices, oils and natural products used in Moroccan cooking, wellbeing and cosmetics. The evening concludes with a group meal and time to reflect on the contrasts between historic Marrakesh and the modern city.
Day 2
Water, Landscapes and the High Atlas
Travel towards Amizmiz in the lower slopes of the High Atlas, stopping at the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir to investigate why water is stored and managed in Morocco’s dry climate. Pupils will consider competing demands from homes, farming and tourism, as well as the growing pressures created by drought and climate change. Continue into the mountain countryside, where exposed rocks, steep valleys and changing vegetation provide opportunities to discuss tectonic uplift, weathering, erosion and flash flooding. After a picnic lunch, meet local residents with support from the guide and learn how altitude, water availability and access to services shape rural livelihoods. Depending on the final programme, the return journey may include an experience in the Agafay landscape before returning to Marrakesh for dinner.
Day 3
A Day with a Rural Community
Spend the day in a traditional community on the Marrakesh Plain and experience rural Morocco through respectful, practical activities. The group will receive a warm welcome with Moroccan mint tea and learn about hospitality, family life and the rhythms of the village. With local hosts and an interpreting guide, pupils may observe food preparation, farming, water use, crafts or other daily activities, giving them the chance to ask questions directly and compare rural life with their own community. A shared traditional meal encourages cultural exchange and discussion about how changing rainfall, employment, migration and tourism affect village life. In the evening, return towards Marrakesh for a cultural dinner experience featuring Moroccan food and traditional entertainment.
Day 4
Learning, Architecture and Journey Home
Visit the historic Ben Youssef Madrasa in the heart of the medina. Pupils will explore its courtyard, student rooms, geometric decoration, carved plaster and cedar woodwork while learning how the building once served as an important centre of Islamic scholarship. Continue through the nearby souks for a final look at the workshops and trading traditions encountered earlier in the tour, with supervised time to purchase souvenirs where the flight schedule allows. The group will then transfer to Marrakesh Menara Airport for the return flight to the UK, using the journey home to review how landscape, water, climate, faith and community are connected across Morocco.
