Empires, Faith & Cultural Exchange
Istanbul gives pupils the opportunity to explore more than two thousand years of history within one extraordinary city. Formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, it became a centre of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman worlds, leaving behind an exceptional collection of palaces, mosques, monuments and marketplaces.
Through guided visits and time spent in the city’s historic neighbourhoods, pupils will examine how belief, architecture, commerce and geography have shaped Istanbul. The journey combines major landmarks with lively bazaars, museums and panoramic viewpoints, creating a memorable introduction to both historic and contemporary Turkey.

This itinerary can be adapted around your curriculum, group requirements and preferred travel dates.
Day 1
Welcome to Istanbul
Fly from the UK to Istanbul, where the group will meet its local representative and transfer to the accommodation. After checking in, take an accompanied orientation walk through the surrounding neighbourhood. Pupils will become familiar with the city’s streets, public spaces and local customs while receiving an introduction to Istanbul’s geography and its position between Europe and Asia. The evening provides time to settle in, enjoy a group meal and prepare for the historical visits ahead.
Day 2
Palaces, Mosques and the Grand Bazaar
Begin with a guided exploration of Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district. At Topkapı Palace, pupils will discover how the Ottoman sultans governed a vast empire and examine ceremonial spaces, courtyards and collections connected with palace life. Continue to the Blue Mosque to study its domes, minarets, calligraphy and famous İznik tilework, before exploring the ancient Hippodrome and its surviving monuments. In the afternoon, enter the Grand Bazaar, where thousands of shops and covered lanes provide a vivid introduction to traditional craftsmanship, trade, negotiation and the city’s long-standing role in cultural exchange.
Day 3
Miniatürk, Pierre Loti and Industrial Heritage
Visit Miniatürk to see detailed models of important buildings and monuments from across Turkey and former Ottoman territories. The displays help pupils compare architectural styles, historic periods and regional identities before they encounter a different perspective from Pierre Loti Hill, with panoramic views across the Golden Horn. Continue to the Rahmi M. Koç Museum, where exhibits on transport, communication, engineering and industry reveal how technology transformed everyday life in modern Turkey. Finish in the Spice Bazaar, exploring its colourful stalls and learning how spices, foods and commodities travelled through Istanbul along international trading routes.
Day 4
Final Discoveries and Journey Home
After breakfast, use the final morning for an accompanied walk or a visit suited to the group’s flight schedule. This may include time around Sultanahmet, views of the Bosphorus or an opportunity to revisit a local market for souvenirs. Pupils can reflect on the contrasting Byzantine, Ottoman and modern influences encountered throughout the tour before transferring to Istanbul Airport for the return flight to the UK. The journey home offers a final opportunity to review how geography, faith, empire and commerce have shaped the city.
